Let’s start from the beginning. “Bidgely” means electricity in Hindi, the native language of our founders Abhay and Vivek. In 2011, these guys set out to do something big. They were developing a technology that could understand people’s energy consumption down to the specific appliance without installing any plug-level sensors inside the home. Before, utilities and home energy users could see how their usage changed throughout the day and month, but they had no way of knowing exactly what was causing that change. Over the next couple years, Abhay and Vivek continued to grow their team. Soon, there were data scientists and engineers building advanced functionalities that could generate insights and advice on how to optimize your energy consumption, user experience specialists designing a beautiful and dynamic web interface, and sales and business development folks initiating conversations with potential utility and corporate partners.
Bidgely got lots of great press when Abhay co-published a paper in 2012 on the concept of energy disaggregation and secured a first round of funding from venture capital firm Khosla Ventures. We were quick to join the White House Green Button Initiative to enable energy innovation across the country. This was a big step toward making Bidgely’s insights universally accessible.
By November of 2013, we were ready to go to market – providing our solution to utilities to help them elevate their customer satisfaction ratings, increase customer engagement in a big way, and help make efficiency and demand programs better.
