Four Phases to Scale Transportation Electrification

What can utilities do to support the waves of incoming EVs? For utilities in the U.S., where EV penetration varies significantly by geographic region, it is important to first understand the utility’s current position on the EV-adoption spectrum. With that, utilities can then determine the level of sophistication needed for upcoming strategies and investments. Maria Kretzing, Head of Innovation, walks through the phases of scaling transportation electrification in this short video.

Demand Flexibility

The presence of new distributed energy resources like solar, batteries and electric vehicles has the same impact on DSM programs as they have on grid planning. The focus of DSM programs used to be primarily energy efficiency, with an average energy saving goal of 2%. However now, as consumers install solar on their roof and become producers of their own energy, energy savings may no longer be a motivating factor. The DSM paradigm will shift from reducing consumption to flexible demand and influencing when consumers use energy.

Bidgely’s CEO, Abhay Gupta, shares more in this 1-minute video.

Take DSM Targeting from 1% to 99%

Strong DSM programs are rooted in knowing your customer. While legacy programs were dependent on polls or active customer input to inform design, the power of analytics now gives utilities the ability to understand specific appliance usage frictionlessly and at an unprecedented scale. Now, rather than designing programs based on 1% of customer inputs, utilities can confidently design by accounting for a majority of their customer base.

Bidgely Co-founder and CTO, Vivek Garud, explains how in this 1-minute video.

Know Your Customers to Think Big, Start Small, Scale Fast

Knowing that no two customers are the same, utilities have to avoid the trap of playing whack-a-mole by offering undifferentiated programs and hoping for effective outcomes. Driving meaningful programmatic ROI requires knowing the load and appliance use of each household, and achieving this is more accessible than one might think.

In this video, Chief Revenue Officer of Bidgely, Gautam Aggarwal, discusses how to think big, start small, and scale fast to achieve stronger results.

EV Behavioral Opt-Out to Managed Charging Opt-In

Bidgely Director of Innovation Maria Kretzing describes how one utility has introduced a behavioral managed charging program for all EV owners that leads to an opt-in, telematics-based managed charging program. The program is designed to maximize the total kilowatt hour shift to off-peak times.

The Danger of Making Big Utility Decisions From Small Customer Data Samples

When it comes to CX, utilities are competing with tech giants like Amazon, Netflix, and Spotify that use big data to iterate and refine customer interactions. Thanks to advancements in analytics, utilities can break away from limited data sets and legacy systems to emulate a gold standard of customer experience using their existing data.

Bidgely Co-founder and CTO, Vivek Garud, explains how in this 1-minute video.
