See practical AI use cases across infrastructure modernization, excavation damage prevention, methane leak detection, and customer-facing programs.
Natural gas utilities are under pressure to improve safety, reliability, resilience, affordability, and environmental stewardship while managing aging infrastructure, methane leak risk, and growing volumes of customer and system data. This NARUC primer shows how AI and advanced analytics can help utilities and regulators evaluate practical use cases across infrastructure modernization, excavation damage prevention, methane leak detection, and customer-facing programs.
Built as an educational resource for state regulators and other stakeholders, the primer draws on real-world examples across infrastructure modernization, excavation damage prevention, methane leak detection, and customer-facing programs. It highlights work from National Grid, NiSource, Southern Company Gas, IBM, Southwest Research Institute, WGL, and Southern California Gas to show what practical AI looks like in the field. One example comes from Southern California Gas, which deployed Bidgely’s UtilityAI-driven Home Energy Report (HER) program in less than four months and, between December 2019 and February 2020, delivered 286,540 therms in savings, with 50% email open rates and 81% “likes.”
